I will admit I was less than thrilled with staying at Roper Lake State Park but, after today, I am so glad we did. We took a day trip to Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area. It is among - if not the - most beautiful places I've ever experienced.
We spent several hours touring in the car and hiking on trails, walking down to the Gila River and Bonita Creek. We talked to a couple individuals who have been camping in the paradise that is Gila Box. Glen and I are currently considering cancelling our reservations for Lost Dutchman State Park near Phoenix, in favor of spending Sunday and Monday at Gila Box instead. Fingers crossed.
Rather than boring you with any more words, I will simply share a dozen or so of the many pics I took today.
Wow! Beautiful place! Y’all look happy!
This was one of our most favorite areas when we were on the road out there.....over 50 years ago? 😯 Sadly, we were not big on recording our adventures back then so I can't be more specific (there were other hippie related issues that...um....you know...kept us from...like, well...taking notes?)
Wow. What more is there to say?
Such happy faces!
'Most beautiful place' sure is high praise Mary! I hope you are able to stay the extra days.
We drove to the end of the paved road to Bonita Creek, a tributary to the Gila River. At the end, the "road" continued in the creek bed, going upstream, but it was too rocky and watery for the e-Niro, so Mary wouldn't let me go off-roading. Anyway, it's a water supply, so probably best not to drive right in the creek. But clearly others had been, based on the wet tire tracks emerging from the water.
