February 2: Alamogordo, NM

Well, we did end up hiking up Dog Canyon, but only a four-mile round trip outing. It was quite beautiful - and almost completely solitary, as we only saw two groups of people the whole time. And, crikey, was it windy!

Here's a quick share of some of the views on our hike, including down onto our campground and out into the Permean Basin and White Sands National Park. No bandwidth for photo editing, so it is what it is.

Note: This post should have said Tularosa Basin, not Permean, if there are any fact checkers out there!

Wow, what a beautiful place and I'm sure the photos don't do it justice! I just anxiously read through your previous few posts about the icy drive through Texas. So glad you made it out there safely!

Looks like it was worth driving through Hell & Ice to get there. Quite sure we'll ever get back there so thanks for the vicarious road trip. 🤗

At the start of the canyon it is super steep and rocky, for the first half mile or so. While we were struggling up the trail, some dude in shorts runs up from below and zips past us, running up the hill as if it was nothing, but it was like climbing stairs for about a half hour. Lots of loose rocks and uneven terrain. Oh well, you take it at whatever speed you can manage.
